May 2nd - Speaking of Vinyl...

Speaking of Vinyl...

Our theme this week is "Co-Workers". I picked the theme, and I had something in mind to photograph a co-worker the other day, but things got really busy and we never had time so it didn't happen.

Then this morning, another co-worker of mine stopped by the house and dropped off this USB turntable for playing old vinyl records and recording tunes into a computer. So I've been playing with this for a while tonight, and just realized - here's my "Co-Worker" photo for the week.

And the title is referring to Lance's post from Wednesday.

  1. I like the lighting on the turntable handle I know there must be a name for that part of the turntable, but its been 20 so odd years since I took mine out of the closet. Is that supertramp spinning on the pad?

I always wondered if this technology worked or not? How is the sound? can you take the pops and hisses out, or do you like that in the vinyl?

  2. That is called a Tone Arm and it holds the needle or stylus. And no, it's Lynyrd Skynyrd - Street Survivors.

As far as quality, I've never had the opportunity to do this with a high end turntable and stylus - as it happened, this one did not spin at a constant speed and it was noticeable with the sound pitch wavering, so I didn't do any recordings with it. I did this a few years ago with a different turntable and it worked pretty well. Sound quality was much better than this one, but still nothing like a CD. You can get software that will reduce noises too but I've not had experience with any.
